Second Helpings and Second Chances

Because homelessness cannot be alleviated by one institution alone, many programs and organizations in our city must work together to bring solutions to the issue. Wheeler enjoys one such partnership with Second Helpings. Together, Wheeler Mission and Second Helpings give second chances.

Second Helpings is a food rescue organization that also provides culinary training and food handling certifications for Wheeler clients. It’s a practical job training program that helps the client obtain sustainable employment.

A recent Wheeler Addiction Recovery Program graduate also completed her training at Second Helpings. She has turned her talents and love for cooking into new opportunities. After years of substance abuse and unemployment, she now desires to spend her time, energy, and attention to providing enjoyable and well prepared meals. She has been clean and sober for more than two years, is employed full time, and living on her own.

This is the kind of partnership that works!

I couldn’t get sober on my own

People in addiction often feel like they are drowning. Working hard to stay afloat, with hopes of swimming to shore – the pull of their addiction is too strong and they find themselves going under yet again. Things change when someone comes alongside to help. The drowning addict can be led to dry ground.

This was the picture of a young man who recently completed a two-year addiction recovery program with Wheeler Mission. He testifies that before he came to Wheeler, he tried to stop using drugs on his own – his vision was to gain sobriety without anyone’s help. As he looks back on those years of striving, saying that what he lacked was a leader.

Today, he says “there was no way I could get sober on my own.” And today, he shares that the words of an old hymn continue to guide him to that Leader he needed for so long.

My faith has found a resting place,
Not in device or creed;
I trust the ever living One,
His wounds for me shall plead.

I need no other argument,
I need no other plea,
It is enough that Jesus died,
And that He died for me.

Enough for me that Jesus saves,
This ends my fear and doubt;
A sinful soul I come to Him,
He’ll never cast me out.

There are currently 94 men and women who are enrolled in our addiction recovery programs. They know that people rarely come out of addiction on their own and they would appreciate your prayers.
